When the Ego Changes Jobs
HR note. This document arrived in the internal mail with no sender, addressed simply to "whoever has been trying to run everything." As the Sect maintains no administrative structure, no department could accept it, so it was reassigned to all of them. It processes a single personnel change: the ego is not to be dismissed, downsized, or destroyed — merely moved to a role it can actually do. It is, as far as we can tell, the only job description we have ever approved.
Many spiritual teachings speak about getting rid of the ego.
I am not sure that is necessary.
The ego remembers appointments, finds lost keys, pays bills, and occasionally reminds us not to walk into lamp posts. It is quite useful.
Perhaps the problem begins when it accidentally applies for the position of Supreme Manager of the Cosmos.
That is a stressful job.
Maybe the Great Work is not the destruction of the ego but a change of employment.
Held: too long. Sleep: none. Reviews: catastrophic. Holding up the sky is not, and never was, a one-person job. Position officially vacant — and, it turns out, was never actually staffed by anyone.
Reports to: the heart. Hours: gentle. The ego ceases trying to run existence and becomes a servant of something deeper.
- Find the lost keys.
- Remember the appointments.
- Pay the bills.
- Occasionally remind us not to walk into lamp posts.
Concerning the New Supervisor
The heart that listens before it speaks. The heart that recognizes before it judges. The heart that knows life is not a problem to solve but a mystery to participate in.
On the Name of the Department
This deeper thing goes by several names in the filing system. All of them are accepted:
- Some call this the Divine.
- Some call it Source.
- Some call it the Cosmic Mother / Father.
- Some simply call it Love.
The name matters less than the movement.
On the Dignity of Service
None of them become smaller by serving. They become more fully themselves.
The desk plate has been re-engraved. Both titles still fit.
And perhaps the ego, relieved of the impossible task of holding up the sky, finally relaxes and says:
Letter of Acceptance & Graceful Resignation“Very well. I shall remain in charge of finding the car keys.”The Egosigned, at last off the clockWhich, all things considered, is already a noble contribution to the universe.
A Small Reflection
To make the ego a servant is not to humiliate it.
A Performance Review, of sorts:
- A good servant is trusted.
- A good servant is valued.
- A good servant performs a function that matters.
The shift is simply this:
- The ego stops trying to be the source of life.
- The ego becomes an instrument through which life may express itself.
In this arrangement, nothing is rejected.
Everything finds its rightful place.
