Or: How a Cat Quietly Became the Most Important Member of the Household

A note from the archive. We have spent our entire existence insisting that nobody is in charge. Administrative structure not found. No leader, no ranks, no hierarchy. Then this paper arrived and we read it twice, and it appears we have been housing an absolute monarch the whole time. She has never called a meeting. She has never issued a decree. She has never asked anyone to follow her — and she is obeyed completely, every single day, by people who believe it was their own idea. Benno is unavailable, as usual. Minka is extremely available. She is on the chair. She has simply never mentioned any of this, which we now understand to be the entire technique.

Introduction

There exists a persistent misunderstanding among humans that they own cats.

This belief is charming.

Cats generally tolerate it for the same reason wise elders tolerate children explaining how the universe works.

With affection.

And with absolutely no intention of changing their own behavior.

The arrangement is simple:

At first, I believed this was my home.

The bed had become shared territory.

I was not the owner.

I was staff.

The Royal Schedule

Humans organize their lives around calendars.

Cats organize theirs around significance.

Observation of birds.
Nap.
Inspection of household activities.

Food delivered slightly after expectations is evidence that civilization may be collapsing.

Fortunately, cats are compassionate creatures and generally allow humans opportunities for redemption.

The Windowsill Doctrine

Many spiritual traditions encourage practitioners to become present.

Cats solved this problem centuries ago.

Observe a cat on a windowsill.

No urgency.
No ambition.
No concern for reputation.
No interest in productivity metrics.

Simply watching.

A leaf moves.
A bird lands.
Rain falls.
The world continues.

The cat attends.

On certain days, the rain arrives after a long absence.

Not creating a philosophy about precipitation.

Simply participating in the moment.

There is wisdom in this.

Humans often believe they train cats.

Research suggests otherwise.

Phase 4The human becomes convinced this was their idea.

This process has proven remarkably effective.

The Slow Blink

Among humans, trust is often communicated through words.

Cats employ a more sophisticated system.

"You are accepted."
"I am comfortable."
"Now kindly continue whatever service you were providing."

If Minka were asked to summarize her worldview, it might sound something like this:

Rest when resting is appropriate.
Eat when eating is appropriate.
Observe when observing is appropriate.
Love freely.
Demand snacks professionally.
Never run when a dignified walk will suffice.
Sit with those you care about.
The rain is beautiful.
The blanket is warm.
This moment is enough.

Final Observation

Many humans search for teachers in distant places.

Some find them in books.
Some find them in forests.
Some find them in moments of stillness.

And some discover that a small furry creature has been demonstrating presence, patience, trust, curiosity, and unapologetic authenticity all along.

Not through instruction.

Through example.
