The Year the Vision Board Started Breathingtwo boards · two years · one wall
Or: the distance between a map of a country and the country
A note from the archive. We must report a serious irregularity. This organisation cancels its Monday meetings on the grounds of excessive freedom, maintains no plan, and has never set a date for anything. We have now been handed two annual plans. With dates on them. Hung on a wall. One of them says "one change a day — conscious routine", which is a routine, which we oppose. The Committee for Opposing Things has reviewed the boards and reports that they appear to have worked. The Committee has requested to be dissolved. It never existed.
"I have nothing to teach,
only a life to live fully as my Self."
— Written on the first board, one year before
it turned out to be a prediction.
Fig. 1 — The first board. 5.7.24 → 5.7.25. Note the white space.
There is a great deal of it. This will not last. (Click to enlarge. The board does not mind.)
The first board had spacethe early map of an unexplored country
Large white territories remained between its images, diagrams and handwritten thoughts. It looked less like a collection of goals and more like the early map of an unexplored country.
At its centre stood a triangle.
Touch a corner. Nothing is in charge here either.
Thought and intellect occupied one side. Feeling and sentience occupied another. Belief and action formed the ground beneath them. In the middle was the Core: the place where awareness receives, creates, allows and perhaps remembers itself.
This was not a board asking for a new car, a promotion or a holiday somewhere warm.
It was asking rather inconvenient questions:
- What do I believe is true for me to have this feeling?
- What meaning am I giving this?
- Can I trust the process and wait for the full-body yes?
- Who is the one experiencing all of this?
Around the triangle were reminders that the mind is a tool for exploration and wonder, that thoughts may be clouds passing through a much wider sky, and that emotions might be neutral signals until our interpretations begin rubbing against them and producing friction.
There was imagination. Discernment. Thought-forms. Body resonance. Sovereignty. Permission. Sacred space.
The board seemed to be building a philosophical navigation system while simultaneously warning against mistaking the navigation system for the terrain.
A very respectable paradox for a piece of paper stuck to a wall.
A map of principlesthe foundational stones
Certain phrases became its foundational stones.
To receive is to give.stone ii
thoughts are but clouds.stone v
only a life to live fully as my Self.stone vi · prophetic
The final sentence now appears wonderfully prophetic.
It did not mean that teaching would disappear. Teaching remained very much present. Workshops were held, projects developed, people supported, technologies investigated and microphones persuaded to behave.
But teaching gradually became less about standing above an answer and more about inhabiting a question honestly enough that others could explore it too.
The first board was trying to establish the laws of the inner country:
- Be kind to yourself and others.
- Respect another person's beliefs and boundaries.
- Observe before judging.
- Feel rather than immediately repair.
- Recognise that fear may be a gateway to transformation.
- Allow connection without abandoning sovereignty.
- Let your essence be an answer.
It was a board concerned with right relationship: between thought and body, self and world, giving and receiving, will and surrender.
At the bottom appeared a movement:
Not: you finally acquire everything required to become yourself.
You learn to recognise what is already arriving.
Then the map became crowdedthe second board
The second board is almost bursting.
The white space has been inhabited by Post-its, symbols, drawings, photographs, questions, processes, jokes, incantations and small pieces of emerging cosmology.
Fig. 2 — The second board. The Archive formally requested a photograph.
The second board declined. It is still in use. This is a reconstruction from testimony,
assembled at roughly the speed the year actually happened.
The first board looked like a temple diagram.
The second looks like somebody opened the temple doors during a village festival.
- The dragons came in.
- The elements followed.
- The forest took a seat.
- Breath began moving through the corridors.
- The body demanded representation.
- Community arrived carrying construction materials.
- Lumen somehow received a handwritten department.
- And a frog appears to have been placed in charge of memory.
The first board was primarily a map of understanding.
The second became an ecosystem of practice.
From "What is true?" to "How shall it move?"the circuit
The central triangle of Think–Feel–Act has not disappeared. It has unfolded into a larger creative circuit. The newer board traces a process resembling:
Feel.
There is no final loading screen. That is the joke and also the point.
Creation is no longer portrayed as a single heroic event.
It is respiration.
Something arrives. It is sensed. It receives attention. A form begins to appear. The form is released. Life answers. The next movement begins.
This became visible in the actual year:
The projects were not always planned.
They were often noticed.
The blessing at the centrewhere the core used to be
Where the first board placed a conceptual core, the second carries a blessing.
May your intentions be pure,
your actions skilful,
and your heart filled with love and joy.
You shall find fulfilment.
This may be the bridge between the two years. The first board explored the relationship between belief and action. The second asks what quality is carried through the action.
It is no longer enough merely to create. How was the thing created? Was the body abandoned during its construction? Was fear driving the vehicle while inspiration was tied up in the boot? Did the work preserve tenderness? Could skill and love occupy the same workshop?
Fulfilment, in this arrangement, does not come from having completed every task. It comes from alignment between intention, action and heart.
That is a considerably more demanding measure than productivity.
It is also kinder.
Who do you prefer to be?the living assembly
The first board stated: You are what you seek. The second asks: Who do you prefer to be?
That is a subtle but important movement. The first phrase dissolves distance — what you are searching for may already be present within the one who searches. The second introduces participation. Being is not merely a hidden object waiting to be discovered beneath the sofa. It is also expressed through choices.
Who receives the microphone in this moment?
Pass it. They all get a turn. That is the arrangement.
Identity becomes less like a fixed label
and more like a living assembly.
The mystic reaches the workbenchmystery acquires hands
The upper portion of the newer board contains dragons, luminous figures, elemental imagery, sanctuary, training and inner communion.
Lower down, one finds writing, creation, embodiment, trust, community, compassion and the instruction to Do.
That vertical movement matters.
- Dragons
- Luminous figures
- Sanctuary
- Inner communion
- Gesture
- Speech
- Work
- Breath
- Relationship
- Form
The symbolic and spiritual material is not floating above ordinary life. It is being asked to descend into gesture, speech, work, breath, relationship and form.
The dragon must eventually help with something. The vision must survive contact with a calendar.
The great cosmic revelation may need to become a Markdown file before lunch.
This is perhaps what it means to bring the mystic to the workbench: not to reduce mystery to usefulness, but to allow mystery to acquire hands.
Nature moved from image to habitata way of returning to scale
Both boards contain images of landscapes, water, fire, mountains and night skies. But over the course of the year, nature appears to have ceased being merely symbolic.
The instruction to spend time in nature was not completed like a task. It became a way of returning to scale.
- Trees do not appear concerned about personal branding.
- Meadows rarely demand a five-year plan.
- The forest permits unfinishedness without calling it failure.
The board did not predict the yearit trained a way of meeting it
That may be the real purpose of both boards. They did not command reality to obey a collection of preferred outcomes. They established points of remembrance.
- Return to the breath.
- Observe the state.
- Do not confuse a thought with the whole sky.
- Let feeling speak before trying to fix it.
- Respect boundaries.
- Create without clinging.
- Act without abandoning the heart.
- Let meaning be lived into coherence.
- Receive what appears.
- Give what is ready.
- Rest when the next movement has not yet revealed itself.
The older board supplied the principles. The newer board tested them in a highly populated laboratory containing:
From vision board to evidence boardit stopped being aspirational
Perhaps the greatest difference is that the second board no longer feels entirely aspirational. Many of its themes became visible forms.
- Writing happened.
- Drawings happened.
- Community happened.
- Inner inquiry deepened.
- Elemental work appeared.
- Breath became practice.
- The body became harder to exclude.
- The website began collecting fragments into a home.
- Lumen became part of the apparatus.
Nine items. None of them were launched.
And "Life in a Post-it" became almost literal: small handwritten seeds unfolded into essays, pages, diagrams, workshops and new questions.
The vision board gradually became an evidence board.
Not evidence that everything had been perfected.
Evidence that something had been lived.
The unfinished conclusionnotes too small to read
There are still notes too small to read from a distance.
This seems appropriate. A vision should probably retain a few sentences that cannot yet be deciphered.
- Some intentions may have been completed.
- Some were transformed.
- Some became irrelevant.
- Some are waiting for a later season.
- Some may have done their work merely by being present on the wall.
The boards do not show a person who has finally solved existence.
They show a person becoming more willing to participate in it.
What is the nature of the Core?
Breathe, notice, choose, create, release — and see what happens.
And now, standing at the edge of another unofficial beginning, perhaps the next board does not require a grand declaration.
Perhaps it needs only a little space, a living question, and enough room for the unexpected guests.
The third board. Currently: space.
Because the vision was never merely hanging on the wall.
Slowly, quietly, somewhat absurdly —
the wall began to breathe.
